A significant infrastructure project has been announced in the UAE that is expected to greatly improve travel between Dubai Sharjah and Ajman. Authorities have revealed plans for a new federal highway with an estimated investment of Dhs6 billion aimed at easing congestion and enhancing daily commuting across these key emirates.
The upcoming road will stretch approximately 68 kilometres and is designed to handle high traffic volumes efficiently. It will include between six and eight lanes in each direction along with 10 major intersections and four flyovers to ensure smoother traffic movement and reduced travel delays.
Alongside the highway construction, improvements in public transport are also being introduced. The plan includes the development of 10 essential transit routes supported by Bus Rapid Transit systems and dedicated bus lanes. These routes will connect directly to metro networks and central urban areas making commuting more accessible and convenient for residents.
This large-scale development is part of broader national efforts led by the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure to modernize transport systems across the country. The initiative aligns with the UAE’s long-term “We the UAE 2031” vision which focuses on improving mobility reducing congestion and supporting population growth.
In addition to the new highway project the UAE has outlined an extensive Dhs170 billion transport strategy. This includes expanding existing roads and studying the feasibility of a new 12-lane federal highway stretching around 120 kilometres with the capacity to handle up to 360000 trips daily.
Key upgrades will also be made to major roads across the country. Etihad Road will be widened with additional lanes increasing its capacity significantly while Emirates Road will be expanded to 10 lanes across its full length improving travel time and efficiency. Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road will also undergo expansion to boost its capacity and support growing traffic demands.
Officials have emphasized that these developments aim to increase the overall efficiency of the national road network by up to 73 percent within the next five years. Rising population levels increased reliance on private vehicles and overlapping work and school schedules have all contributed to traffic challenges making these upgrades essential.
With these ambitious projects the UAE continues to invest heavily in infrastructure ensuring faster safer and more efficient transportation for residents and visitors alike.
