Umm Suqeim Street Upgrade Reaches 70 Percent Completion as Dubai Pushes Forward with Major Traffic Revamp

Date:

Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has announced that 70 percent of the massive improvement works on Umm Suqeim Street have now been completed, marking a major milestone in one of the city’s key traffic infrastructure projects.

The current phase of the project stretches from the junction of Al Khail Road to the intersection with Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Road. Once fully completed, the upgraded route is expected to significantly ease congestion, cutting down travel time by 61 percent — from the current 9.7 minutes to just 3.8 minutes.

This transformation is part of a larger master plan to enhance the corridor between Umm Suqeim and Al Qudra, which will extend from Jumeirah Street all the way to Emirates Road. This major upgrade is set to benefit more than one million residents in surrounding areas including Dubai Hills, Arjan, Al Barsha South, and Dubai Science Park.

Among the completed developments so far is the critical intersection at Umm Suqeim and Al Barsha South, near Kings’ School. This includes the construction of an 800-meter tunnel with four lanes in each direction, designed to accommodate high volumes of traffic and ease congestion during peak hours.

His Excellency Mattar Al Tayer, Director General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors at RTA, emphasized the strategic importance of the Umm Suqeim–Al Qudra Corridor. He explained that the initiative is a vital east-west axis in Dubai’s transportation grid, enhancing links between four of the city’s key highways: Sheikh Zayed Road, Al Khail Road, Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Road, and Emirates Road.

With an increased capacity to handle up to 16,000 vehicles per hour in both directions, the project is expected to greatly improve traffic flow across Dubai and support the city’s rapidly growing urban areas.
