Jam has long been a breakfast staple loved for its sweet fruity flavour and nostalgic appeal especially when spread over warm toast or paired with butter. But for health-conscious eaters store-bought jams often come with a downside as most are loaded with added sugar and unnecessary calories.
Offering a healthier alternative Dr Joseph Salhab a Florida-based gastroenterologist known for sharing gut-friendly nutrition tips has introduced a simple homemade strawberry chia seed jam that contains no added sugar and is rich in fibre antioxidants and essential nutrients.
Shared on social media Dr Salhab’s recipe focuses on real whole ingredients and minimal processing making it ideal for anyone looking to enjoy jam without compromising on health. One of his key tips is using frozen strawberries instead of fresh ones as lightly cooking frozen fruit helps release a deeper more concentrated strawberry flavour.
The recipe requires only four ingredients and can be prepared in minutes. Frozen strawberries are gently simmered until soft then mashed to release their natural juices. A splash of fresh lemon juice brightens the flavour while chia seeds are added to naturally thicken the mixture and boost fibre content. A small drizzle of pure maple syrup provides gentle natural sweetness without refined sugar.
Once cooked the jam is cooled and refrigerated for a couple of hours allowing the chia seeds to set. The result is a naturally sweet spread that works perfectly on toast with nut butter stirred into yoghurt spooned over oatmeal or used in healthy dessert recipes.
Dr Salhab’s approach highlights how simple ingredient swaps can turn everyday comfort foods into nutritious options that support digestion and overall wellness.
