Indian cricket legends Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma are set to make their comeback next month during India’s ODI series in Australia. However, with both icons nearing the twilight of their international journeys, former cricketer Yograj Singh has strongly suggested that they require a strict and uncompromising mentor similar to Chandrakant Pandit to extend their careers.
Yograj Singh, in an exclusive chat with InsideSport, stated that while Kohli and Rohit remain India’s greatest batting stars, their recent failures in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy highlighted a worrying trend of arrogance. He stressed that discipline, humility, and relentless hard work are the only ways to maintain longevity at the top level. Drawing comparisons with Sachin Tendulkar’s career, Yograj reminded that the master blaster’s grounded nature and willingness to play domestic cricket allowed him to remain relevant till the age of 43.
He emphasized that senior pros like Kohli and Rohit must lead by example, not just rely on past achievements. “No player is bigger than the game. If I were their coach, I would wake them up at 5 AM for fitness drills and 10km runs. Kohli was repeatedly getting out in Australia because of technical errors. Why didn’t anyone guide him? Similarly, Rohit too needs a reality check. I keep asking, why are modern legends satisfied with an average of 50 when Bradman averaged 99? That shows there is room for improvement,” Yograj explained.
Yograj further praised Chandrakant Pandit’s coaching style, noting that he values performance above reputation. He recalled how Pandit did not hesitate to sideline established players if they failed to deliver. “This is exactly the kind of attitude Kohli and Rohit need. If you perform, you play. If not, step aside. Being senior cricketers means they must inspire others, not hide behind excuses. Everyone has rough patches, but accountability is crucial,” Yograj said.
Both Kohli and Rohit had stepped away from T20 internationals after guiding India to World Cup victory in Barbados last year. They later announced their surprising retirement from Test cricket earlier this May, raising questions about their future. While many expected them to continue in ODIs till the 2027 World Cup, fresh reports indicate that their international journey might end during the Australia series in October. Though neither has made an official statement, their selection for the upcoming three-match ODI tour is almost certain, keeping fans eagerly waiting for their response to the mounting pressure.
