Team India’s batting icon Virat Kohli has put an end to all speculation surrounding his Test future, making it clear that he will not reverse his retirement from the longest format. The clarification arrived shortly after his match-winning 135-run masterclass in the opening ODI against South Africa in Ranchi, a knock that reignited conversations about his return to red-ball cricket.

Kohli’s dominant performance powered India to a competitive total of 349 runs, which ultimately secured a 17-run victory and a 1-0 lead in the three-match series. His Player of the Match effort rekindled hope among fans who wished to see him once again in whites, especially after India’s recent Test struggles. However, the former Test captain decisively shut down all such discussions.

Having retired earlier this year after 123 Tests, 29 centuries and an extraordinary legacy as India’s most successful Test captain, Kohli admitted he is committed to playing just one format going forward. When asked by broadcaster Harsha Bhogle about the possibility of a reversal, Kohli responded with a firm confirmation that his Test chapter is closed for good.

Sunday’s ODI also showcased vintage Virat and Rohit Sharma as the experienced duo stitched together a solid 136-run partnership for the second wicket. Kohli took charge in the powerplay with aggressive intent while Rohit supported with a timely half-century. Once Rohit departed for 57, Kohli anchored the innings until his 100-plus milestone set the stage for India’s strong finish.

Speaking about his mindset and preparation, Kohli emphasised that the mental aspect of the game continues to be his strongest foundation. He expressed that his approach is rooted in daily physical discipline and mental clarity rather than excessive training routines, affirming that as long as his fitness and focus remain sharp, he will continue contributing to India’s limited-overs cricket.
