Virat Kohli made a powerful return to competitive cricket as he guided Royal Challengers Bengaluru to a convincing win in the IPL 2026 opener against Sunrisers Hyderabad. Coming back after a short break since January, Kohli looked in complete control and displayed no signs of rust, finishing unbeaten on 69 to anchor a successful chase of 202.

RCB began their title defence on a strong note, securing victory with more than four overs remaining and six wickets in hand. Kohli played a calm yet authoritative innings, maintaining composure throughout the chase while ensuring the required run rate stayed manageable.

A key highlight of the innings was his crucial 101-run partnership with Devdutt Padikkal, who contributed a well-made half-century. Together, they stabilized the innings and built a solid platform that kept RCB firmly ahead in the contest.

One of the standout moments came when Kohli executed a stunning straight six against Sri Lankan pacer Eshan Malinga. Timing the overpitched delivery to perfection, he produced a flawless lofted drive straight down the ground, showcasing his balance, precision, and class.

Former England captain Kevin Pietersen, who was on commentary duty, was full of praise for Kohli’s exceptional shot-making ability. He highlighted that such timing and positioning cannot be taught easily, emphasizing that Kohli possesses a rare quality that sets him apart from other players in the game.

Earlier in the match, Sunrisers Hyderabad posted a competitive total of 201 for nine, largely powered by captain Ishan Kishan’s explosive innings. The left-hander scored 80 runs off just 38 deliveries, including several boundaries and sixes. He also shared a valuable 97-run partnership with Heinrich Klaasen, who added 31 runs to support the innings.

Despite SRH’s strong total, RCB’s disciplined chase led by Kohli ensured a winning start to their campaign, sending a strong message to the rest of the teams in IPL 2026.
