Losing stubborn belly fat often requires more than just hitting the gym — nutrition plays a huge role too. According to online nutrition coach Justin Gichaba, certain carbs can secretly sabotage your fat loss progress if you’re not careful. In a recent Instagram post titled “3 carbs I avoid daily when I want to shed belly fat”, Justin explained why he stays away from bread, processed sugars and liquid carbs like organic honey and maple syrup while in a fat-burning phase.

Justin believes bread isn’t inherently bad, but for him, it’s a food that’s easy to overeat. Freshly baked bread can taste so good that it becomes impossible to stop at just one slice. This lack of portion control is why he avoids bread when actively trying to lose weight and recommends others be mindful too.

Highly processed sugars top his list of carbs to limit because they’re extremely addictive. From pastries and doughnuts to sugary cereals, these sweet treats can easily lead to overconsumption even if they technically fit into a daily calorie allowance. Justin says he completely skips them except on rare occasions when a craving is too strong to ignore.

Finally, he warns about ‘liquid carbs’ such as organic honey and maple syrup. Although local honey is nutrient-rich, it packs a high calorie count and doesn’t fill you up, making it easy to consume more than you realise. Justin advises saving honey for rare moments and using it sparingly if you’re focused on shedding fat.

Instead, focus on carbs that nourish you and keep you full — think whole grains, legumes, vegetables and fruits in moderation. Pairing these with a calorie deficit, staying hydrated before meals and planning occasional treat meals can help accelerate fat loss results.

Always remember that any drastic diet changes should be discussed with a qualified health professional. Making smart swaps and being aware of hidden calories is key to losing belly fat and keeping it off.
