India’s explosive opener Abhishek Sharma was absent from the playing XI for the T20 World Cup 2026 clash against Namibia at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi, raising questions among fans. The reason behind his omission was confirmed by captain Suryakumar Yadav at the toss.
The 25-year-old Punjab batter was hospitalised on the eve of the match after suffering from a stomach infection. Although he was discharged on Wednesday afternoon, Abhishek was unable to regain full fitness in time and also skipped training sessions ahead of the game. With his recovery still ongoing, the Indian team management chose not to rush him back into action.
With a crucial high-voltage Group A encounter against Pakistan scheduled for February 15 in Colombo, the decision was taken to prioritise Abhishek’s health and ensure he is fully fit for the marquee contest at the R Premadasa Stadium. As a result, Sanju Samson was drafted into the playing XI as a like-for-like attacking option at the top of the order.
India also made another tactical change by bringing back Jasprit Bumrah in place of Mohammed Siraj. Explaining the changes, Suryakumar Yadav said Abhishek was still unwell and needed more time to recover, while Bumrah was fit and ready to return after missing the opener earlier in the tournament due to illness.
The BCCI later issued an official statement confirming that Abhishek Sharma was unavailable for selection and that the medical team is closely monitoring his progress. The update reassured fans that the youngster’s condition is improving and that his return will depend on medical clearance.
Abhishek had already been struggling during India’s previous match against the USA, where his illness worsened mid-game and forced him off the field. With player fitness a top priority during the tournament, India opted for caution rather than risk aggravating the condition.
India went into the Namibia match with confidence, making the most of squad depth as they continue their T20 World Cup 2026 campaign.
