When the BCCI unveiled its 2025–26 central contracts the biggest takeaway was not who moved down but who stayed right at the top. Ravindra Jadeja retained a place in the highest pay bracket while Axar Patel remained in Grade C sparking debate among fans who see both as similar all rounders. The decision however reflects how the board now defines value rather than reputation.
In the new contract structure only three players feature in Grade A Ravindra Jadeja Jasprit Bumrah and Shubman Gill. The narrow list signals a shift in philosophy. The top bracket is now reserved for players who directly shape team balance across formats rather than those carrying star status alone. Jadeja fits this definition almost perfectly.
Even though Jadeja no longer plays T20 internationals his importance in Tests and ODIs remains central to India’s plans. He continues to influence selection combinations because he offers batting depth spin control and elite fielding in a single package. This three dimensional impact allows team management to solve multiple problems with one selection which is precisely what the highest contract tier rewards.
Another factor working in Jadeja’s favour is reliability under pressure. Recent performances in challenging conditions have shown that even when the top order struggles Jadeja’s contribution with both bat and ball keeps India competitive. From a contract perspective this makes him a low risk high value option across marquee series and overseas tours.
The placement of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in Grade B does not contradict Jadeja’s Grade A status. With the A plus category removed the BCCI appears to have compressed the top tier into a smaller group of players who are non negotiable to team structure. Specialist batters can be replaced more easily than an all rounder who dictates balance which explains Jadeja’s retention at the top.
Axar Patel’s Grade C contract reflects a different kind of valuation. While he remains a strong all round option his usage across formats has been more rotational. He has not been treated as an automatic starter in Tests or ODIs in the same way as Jadeja. Grade C now largely includes players who are either format specific or still establishing themselves as permanent selections.
In essence the new contract list is less about comparing talent and more about identifying players around whom teams are built. Jadeja continues to be an all weather solution for India which is why the BCCI has placed him among its most valuable assets while Axar remains just outside that core group.
