Sunscreen is often treated as something you only need outdoors, but dermatologists stress that protecting your skin indoors is just as crucial. Dr. Ruben Bhasin Passi, consultant dermatologist at CK Birla Hospital Gurugram, explains that many people underestimate how much damage indoor light and radiation can cause to the skin. Whether it’s UVA rays seeping through windows, blue light from devices, or even certain indoor lighting sources, your skin remains vulnerable inside your home or workplace. Applying sunscreen daily can prevent long-term damage, early signs of aging, and protect results from skincare treatments.
6 Key Reasons to Apply Sunscreen Indoors
1. UVA rays penetrate glass
While glass blocks UVB rays, UVA rays still pass through, reaching deeper layers of skin. This can cause wrinkles, pigmentation, and premature aging. Sitting near a sunny window or while driving exposes you significantly.
2. Blue light from screens impacts skin health
Phones, laptops, and tablets emit high-energy visible (HEV) blue light that contributes to pigmentation, dullness, and early skin aging. Using a broad-spectrum sunscreen with blue light protection is recommended.
3. Daily exposure leads to cumulative damage
Skin damage builds up silently over time. Indoor sunscreen use ensures ongoing protection, preventing long-term effects of repetitive exposure.
4. Indoor lighting can harm skin
Fluorescent and halogen bulbs release small amounts of UV radiation. While weaker than direct sunlight, prolonged exposure indoors can still trigger pigmentation issues in sensitive skin.
5. Prevention is more effective than treatment
Correcting skin damage with treatments like lasers or peels is costly and time-consuming. Applying sunscreen daily is an inexpensive and effective preventive measure.
6. Crucial for skincare treatments
Those undergoing chemical peels, acne therapy, or laser treatments must wear sunscreen indoors too, or risk pigmentation and reduced effectiveness of procedures.
Dr. Passi advises using a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher as the last step of your skincare routine, and reapplying every 2–3 hours if near windows or screens. Long-term consistency with sunscreen can keep skin healthier, more youthful, and protected.
