Legendary filmmaker Woody Allen is said to be deeply heartbroken and emotional following the death of his longtime friend and former girlfriend, Diane Keaton, who passed away at the age of 79 in California. The 89-year-old director described Keaton as a “great inspiration”, expressing immense grief and disbelief over the tragic loss.
According to reports from People, sources close to Allen revealed that he was “extremely distraught, surprised, and upset” upon learning of Keaton’s passing. “It makes him reflect on his own mortality,” one insider shared, noting that Allen had no prior knowledge of Keaton’s recent health decline.
Allen and Keaton’s relationship dates back to 1969, when the actress starred in Allen’s Broadway play Play It Again, Sam. Though their romance ended after a few years, their professional partnership flourished. The duo collaborated on several iconic films, most notably Annie Hall (1977), which earned Keaton an Academy Award for Best Actress and remains one of Allen’s most celebrated works.
In addition to their cinematic legacy, Keaton had long been one of Allen’s most vocal supporters. During the height of the #MeToo movement in 2018, when old allegations against Allen resurfaced, Keaton publicly defended him on social media, stating: “Woody Allen is my friend and I continue to believe him.” She encouraged others to revisit his 1992 60 Minutes interview, where he denied the accusations made by his adopted daughter, Dylan Farrow.
Despite Allen’s controversial past and his relationship with Soon-Yi Previn, Mia Farrow’s adopted daughter, Keaton maintained her loyalty and friendship with him. “She never let the allegations overshadow the art and the bond they shared,” a source told People.
The two remained in contact over the years, often exchanging texts and phone calls. “Every time she stood up for him, he would reach out to thank her,” the insider added.
Allen had previously expressed his deep admiration for Keaton during the 45th AFI Life Achievement Award ceremony in 2017, calling her “a great, great inspiration.” He added, “Much of what I’ve accomplished in life I owe to her. She really is astonishing—a woman great at everything she does.”
The passing of Diane Keaton marks the end of a remarkable era in Hollywood history—one defined by artistry, resilience, and a friendship that transcended time.
