Eating warm foods and beverages may have more benefits than just comfort. Recent research highlights that consuming hot meals and drinks supports digestion and boosts mental well-being, confirming age-old wisdom from Traditional Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine. Cold foods and beverages, on the other hand, can slow digestion and increase feelings of anxiety or sluggishness, especially in individuals with poor circulation.
A study conducted by San Diego State University examined over 400 adults in the United States, including Asian and White participants, to explore the effects of food and drink temperature on physical and emotional health. Findings revealed that participants consuming cold items often experienced higher levels of anxiety, insomnia, and digestive discomfort. Conversely, those who preferred warm beverages reported better mood, improved sleep, and easier digestion.
The gut-brain axis plays a key role in this process, connecting digestive health with mental well-being. Warm foods require less digestive energy, allowing the body to absorb nutrients efficiently, whereas cold or processed foods may hinder nutrient absorption and impact overall health. The research supports the traditional practice of consuming meals and beverages at a warm temperature to promote both physical and emotional wellness.
