Mohammad Shami has been working on his recovery from an ankle injury, which has kept him away from competitive cricket since the 2023 ODI World Cup. Ajit Agarkar, the chief selector of BCCI, shared an important update on Shami’s condition, stating that the goal is to have him fully fit for the upcoming Test series against Bangladesh. Despite playing the ODI World Cup with his injury, Shami emerged as the highest wicket-taker, securing 24 wickets. Post-tournament, he underwent surgery, leading to an 8-month hiatus from cricket. Recently, Shami has begun bowling in the nets and is putting in efforts at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) to regain his fitness.
Before Team India’s departure for the white-ball tour of Sri Lanka, Agarkar addressed the media, discussing Shami’s progress. Although there is still uncertainty regarding Shami’s recovery timeline, the aim is to have him ready for the first Test against Bangladesh, starting on September 19. “We are aware of the current injuries and hope for quick recoveries. Shami starting to bowl is promising. However, his recovery timeline remains unclear and will need to be confirmed by the NCA,” Agarkar mentioned in the press conference.
In addition to Shami’s recovery, Agarkar acknowledged the team’s strategy regarding the need for seamers in home Tests. He emphasized the importance of monitoring first-class matches to identify and nurture more fast bowlers, strengthening India’s fast bowling lineup. Agarkar highlighted the significance of depth in the bowling attack, especially with numerous Tests ahead. He pointed out the importance of experienced players like Bumrah, Shami, and Siraj, while also indicating the necessity to build up more bowlers through first-class cricket.
