India celebrated a landmark moment in women’s cricket by lifting their maiden Women’s Cricket World Cup trophy with a dominant 52-run victory over South Africa. The win marks the beginning of a new era under the leadership of Harmanpreet Kaur as India finally realised a long-awaited dream after coming close in previous editions.
Shafali Verma emerged as the star of the night with a sensational performance that showcased both power and resilience. Five years after the heartbreaking defeat in the T20 World Cup final at the MCG, she returned with strength and purpose. Her superb knock of 87 runs set a strong foundation for India before she contributed with the ball claiming two crucial wickets to shift momentum entirely in India’s favour. Her all-round brilliance earned her the Player of the Match award placing her among iconic match winners in Indian cricket history.
Deepti Sharma was equally outstanding producing a calm and classy half-century while also running through the South African batting lineup with a stunning five-wicket haul finishing with 5 for 39. Her consistency throughout the tournament earned her the Player of the Tournament title with 20 wickets to her name.
While South Africa captain Laura Wolvaardt fought back with a magnificent century the Indian bowlers held their nerve delivering crucial breakthroughs at key moments. Contributions from Amanjot Kaur Shree Charani and the rest of the bowling unit ensured South Africa never fully settled in the chase.
Earlier in the innings India overcame rain delays and pressure moments thanks to a fiery opening partnership between Shafali Verma and Smriti Mandhana who added the first century stand for India in a World Cup knockout match. Jemimah Rodrigues and Richa Ghosh chipped in with valuable runs while Deepti Sharma provided a composed finish helping India post a formidable 298 runs a total that proved too much for South Africa under lights.
After narrow misses in 2005 2017 and 2020 this title win stands as a monumental achievement lifting the spirit of millions of fans and carving a golden chapter in Indian women’s cricket. The trophy joins the proud legacy of India’s global triumphs led previously by legends Kapil Dev MS Dhoni and Rohit Sharma. Now Harmanpreet Kaur and her fearless squad enter the history books as world champions.
