Novak Djokovic Hints at Possible 2028 Olympics Farewell After Withdrawing from ATP Finals

Date:

Novak Djokovic has sparked speculation about his long-term future after revealing that the 2028 Olympics could mark the final chapter of his illustrious career. The Serbian tennis legend made the remark shortly after withdrawing from the ATP Finals, just hours after clinching the Hellenic Championship title in Athens.

Djokovic defeated Italy’s Lorenzo Musetti in the final, but later confirmed that he would be skipping the ATP Finals, with Musetti taking his spot in the season-ending tournament. Following his latest victory, Djokovic was asked about his retirement plans, and he made it clear that he has no immediate plans to hang up his racket.

“I’ve always had a plan in my head about what I want and how I want it,” Djokovic said. “Since I’ve already achieved every goal possible, I mentioned the 2028 Olympics because I’d like to keep playing for several more years. Ending my career representing Serbia at the Olympic Games would be a beautiful way to finish.”

The 39-year-old added that his future will depend on maintaining both physical and mental fitness. “There are things I can’t fully control, but I’m trying to stay healthy and motivated,” he noted.

Djokovic, who won the gold medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics by defeating Carlos Alcaraz, remains one Grand Slam away from breaking Margaret Court’s all-time record of 24 major titles. However, with emerging stars like Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz dominating the circuit, Djokovic faces a challenging road toward that milestone.

Holding the record for 428 weeks as the world No. 1 and finishing as year-end No. 1 a record eight times, Djokovic’s consistency and longevity continue to define his career. If he does compete through 2028, he would be nearing 42 years old — an extraordinary feat in professional tennis.
