Cristiano Ronaldo Receives First Portugal Red Card in Over Two Decades and Faces Possible World Cup Ban

Date:

Cristiano Ronaldo’s long international career witnessed an unexpected twist during Portugal’s FIFA World Cup 2026 qualifier against Ireland, as the 40-year-old forward was sent off for the first time in his senior national team journey. The dismissal came in the second half after Ronaldo struck Ireland defender Dara O’Shea with his elbow during a physical duel, prompting the referee to initially show a yellow card before upgrading it to a straight red following a pitchside video review.

Ronaldo reacted with a mix of disbelief and frustration as he left the field, responding to jeers from the home crowd with a sarcastic clap and raised thumbs. The incident overshadowed Portugal’s shocking 2-0 defeat, marking a rare setback for the side currently leading Group F.

The red card is particularly significant given Ronaldo’s long-standing discipline record with the national team; the veteran forward had gone 225 appearances without being dismissed. This latest sanction becomes the 13th red card of his senior career, with the previous one issued during a club match for Al Nassr.

Under FIFA’s disciplinary guidelines, serious foul play or violent conduct can lead to suspensions of two or more matches. Since bans apply only to competitive fixtures, Ronaldo now risks missing Portugal’s first match at the 2026 World Cup if the team secures qualification. He will serve an automatic one-match suspension when Portugal face Armenia next. A win would book their place in the tournament hosted across the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

Ronaldo has expressed his ambition to participate in a record sixth World Cup, with the official tournament draw scheduled for December 5 in Washington DC. Meanwhile, Portugal maintain their position at the top of the group with 10 points, narrowly ahead of Hungary, while Ireland remain in contention with seven points.
