Daily Sun Exposure May Lower Cancer Risk Says Delhi-Based Oncologist

Date:

A leading cancer specialist has highlighted how just 20 minutes of sunlight each day could contribute to long-term cancer prevention. Dr Sudipto De a robotic cancer surgeon specialising in genetics and onco-nutrition at Metro Hospitals in Delhi NCR explains that sunlight plays a far greater role in overall health than most people realise. Beyond improving mood and regulating the body’s internal clock natural sunlight helps the body produce vitamin D which supports immunity reduces inflammation and assists in controlling abnormal cell growth.

According to Dr De the right level of vitamin D may reduce the risk of cancers such as colorectal breast and in some cases prostate cancer. He notes that sunlight-derived vitamin D appears to be more effective than supplements although supplements may still help lower the risk of death from cancer. Regular safe sun exposure he says should be part of a holistic cancer prevention approach.

To maintain healthy vitamin D levels Dr De recommends 15 to 20 minutes of direct sunlight daily along with foods rich in vitamin D such as eggs salmon and fortified milk. For individuals with low levels identified through blood tests medical guidance on supplementation is advised. He adds that maintaining vitamin D levels between 30 and 50 nanograms per millilitre is considered ideal. While vitamin D cannot act as a complete shield against disease it remains a valuable contributor to overall wellbeing and long-term health.
