Sinner Breaks Alcaraz Hold on Rivalry with a Crucial Season-Ending Victory

Date:

Jannik Sinner collapsed onto the blue court in relief after securing the final point of the ATP Finals, a reaction he has reserved only for his most meaningful victories. The last time he lay flat on his back like this was after winning the 2024 Australian Open. Despite winning multiple majors since then, none of those celebrations carried the same emotional weight as this triumph in Turin.

The significance of this win was rooted not in the stage but in the opponent across the net. Carlos Alcaraz had dominated their rivalry, winning seven of their previous eight meetings. After suffering a painful loss to the Spaniard in the US Open final, Sinner entered this showdown with a mission. His tightly contested 7-6(4) 7-5 win showcased both mental resilience and key adjustments that he had hinted at months earlier.

Following the US Open defeat, Sinner publicly acknowledged the need for change. Despite reaching all four Slam finals this season and holding the world No.1 ranking for 65 straight weeks, he felt predictable against Alcaraz. Determined to evolve, he committed to breaking away from his comfort zone at the baseline and adding more unpredictability to his game.

His improvements were evident in Turin. Sinner introduced greater variety, mixing drop shots and volleys into his baseline-heavy style. Two key moments captured this shift: an unexpected drop shot early in the second set followed by a delicate sliced volley to secure a crucial break opportunity. He complemented this with exceptional net play, winning 88 percent of his points at the net.

Sinner’s serve, however, was the most noticeable upgrade. After struggling on both first and second serves in New York, he reversed the numbers in the ATP Finals, winning 84 percent of first-serve points. Even his second serve showed renewed aggression, frequently reaching speeds near 190 kmph. Although this approach brought double faults, it also earned him more free points. His coaches Simone Vagnozzi and Darren Cahill redesigned his serving mechanics soon after the US Open to improve power and precision.

Alcaraz, who dealt with a minor hamstring issue during the match, acknowledged the leap Sinner had taken. Their rivalry continues to push both players to refine their strengths and eliminate weaknesses, often with improvements aimed specifically at countering each other.

As Sinner looks ahead to a crucial December training block, Alcaraz is already preparing for the next chapter of their duel. With both determined to elevate their games, the coming season promises even more intense battles between the two young leaders of modern men’s tennis.
