Former India captain Anil Kumble unintentionally became the centre of attention during the closing stages of Day 4 of the second Test in Guwahati, after his animated reaction to KL Rahul’s dismissal captured widespread attention online. While analysing the moment in the commentary box, Kumble instinctively recreated Rahul’s misjudged shot—an action that was immediately noticed by viewers and soon circulated across social platforms.
The incident unfolded when Simon Harmer, brought into the attack to make use of the deepening rough outside the off stump, delivered a drifting off-spinner that dipped sharply. Rahul, on 6, committed too early to a forward stroke, assuming the ball was full enough to drive. Without moving fully to the pitch and attempting to play across the line on a wearing surface, he ended up exposing his off-stump. The ball gripped, spun back sharply, and shattered his stumps, leaving India in deeper trouble at 27/2 while chasing 522.
Kumble, breaking down the dismissal on the broadcast, did not soften his views. He praised Harmer’s delivery but stressed Rahul’s technical lapse. According to Kumble, the drift and revolutions on the ball demanded decisive footwork—something Rahul failed to display. He explained that experienced batters typically adopt a more cautious approach on fourth- and fifth-day pitches where spin and rough patches are significant factors.
The former India coach also pointed out how Rahul’s guard choice forced him into a stretching position, further exposing his off-stump. Standing on middle-and-leg, Kumble noted, leaves the batter reaching for the ball instead of smothering it.
