FIFA Faces Backlash Over Special Disciplinary Ruling Allowing Cristiano Ronaldo to Play at 2026 World Cup

Date:

FIFA is under intense public scrutiny after issuing a revised disciplinary ruling that allows Cristiano Ronaldo to remain eligible for Portugal’s opening World Cup 2026 fixtures. The controversy stems from an incident during Portugal’s qualifier against the Republic of Ireland, where Ronaldo elbowed Dara O’Shea—an action that typically warrants a three-match suspension under FIFA’s disciplinary code for violent conduct.

Ronaldo served only one match of the expected ban in Portugal’s final qualifier against Armenia. Shortly afterward, FIFA’s disciplinary committee adjusted the sanction, opting to place the remaining two-match suspension under a one-year probation period. Officials highlighted Ronaldo’s long-standing record of 225 international appearances without a red card as part of the justification.

Under the probation terms, the remaining suspension will only be enforced if Ronaldo commits another offense of similar severity within the specified period. The decision aligns with Article 27 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code, which permits the organization to reduce or suspend bans at its discretion.

The ruling has been widely questioned due to its timing, coming immediately after Ronaldo attended a high-profile White House dinner featuring U.S. President Donald Trump, FIFA President Gianni Infantino, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, and notable global figures such as Elon Musk. Critics argue that the revised disciplinary decision appears unusually lenient given the circumstances.

FIFA reiterated that the probationary ruling does not eliminate the possibility of further sanctions should another infringement occur. Additionally, the Portuguese Football Federation retains the right to appeal the decision before the FIFA Appeal Committee.
