FIFA Awards Inaugural Peace Prize to US President Trump at 2026 World Cup Draw

Date:

US President Donald J. Trump was presented with the first-ever FIFA Peace Prize on December 5, 2025 — a significant shift for the football governing body, which traditionally focused solely on sport. The award was handed over by FIFA President Gianni Infantino during the World Cup 2026 draw in Washington, D.C., where the 48-team tournament’s groupings were announced.

According to FIFA, the Peace Prize recognizes individuals who have “taken exceptional and extraordinary actions for peace and by doing so united people across the world.” Infantino described Trump as deserving of the honour and personally presented him with a golden trophy, a commemorative medal, and a certificate acknowledging his contributions toward global unity.

In his remarks, Trump called the award “one of the great honours of my life,” and pointed to his administration’s diplomatic initiatives, claiming his efforts helped broker ceasefires and prevent conflicts.

The introduction of the Peace Prize marks a notable departure for FIFA — which has until now confined its awards to sporting achievements — and underscores its evolving ambition to position football as a vehicle for global peace and unity.
