UK Doctor Reveals the Healthiest Way to Eat Oats and Exposes Common Breakfast Myths

Date:

A London-based physician has shared practical advice on choosing the healthiest oats while cautioning consumers against misleading food marketing. Dr Rupy Aujla, who specialises in General Practice and Emergency Medicine, explains that while oats are widely promoted as a nutritious breakfast, not all oat-based products deliver the same health benefits. According to him, many packaged oat snacks and instant options marketed as heart-friendly are often loaded with added sugars, reducing their nutritional value.

Dr Aujla recommends sticking to whole organic oats such as jumbo oats or steel-cut oats. These retain the natural grain structure, slow digestion, and help maintain stable energy levels throughout the morning. He also advises against eating oats on their own with sweeteners, calling it “dessert disguised as breakfast,” as it can lead to hunger shortly after eating. Instead, oats should be combined with protein and healthy fats to create a balanced meal.

Another key recommendation is to choose organic oats whenever possible, as oats are known to contain higher pesticide residues compared to some other grains. For better digestion and nutrient absorption, Dr Aujla suggests soaking oats overnight, which helps reduce anti-nutrients like phytic acid and makes them gentler on the gut. His guidance highlights simple dietary changes that can turn oats into a truly nourishing breakfast rather than a sugar-heavy meal.
