Former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has weighed in on the debate surrounding Sanju Samson’s selection over Shubman Gill in India’s T20 World Cup squad, stating that Samson’s knock in Ahmedabad had little influence on the final call. According to Ashwin, the team management had already made up its mind well before the final T20I against South Africa, making the decision more of a formality than a last-minute judgment.
The exclusion of Shubman Gill from the squad announced by chief selector Ajit Agarkar and captain Suryakumar Yadav came as a major talking point. Gill, once seen as a key figure in India’s T20 plans, was left out as the selectors leaned towards a more aggressive opening combination. This effectively confirmed Sanju Samson’s return to the opening role alongside Abhishek Sharma, a move that had been widely discussed in cricketing circles.
Ashwin, speaking on his YouTube channel Ash ki Baat, explained that Samson’s quick 37-run innings in Ahmedabad did not alter the selectors’ thinking. He suggested that once Gill missed matches due to injury, it became evident that Samson was the preferred choice for the World Cup. Ashwin emphasized that such selection patterns are common in international cricket and often decided well in advance.
Samson’s inclusion also influenced other squad decisions. Ishan Kishan was picked as a like-for-like wicketkeeping option following his strong performances in domestic cricket, while Rinku Singh was preferred as a finisher, replacing Jitesh Sharma. Axar Patel was reinstated as vice-captain, strengthening leadership depth under Suryakumar Yadav.
Overall, Ashwin’s remarks indicate that India’s T20 World Cup selection was driven by long-term planning and balance rather than isolated performances, signaling a clear shift in the team’s approach ahead of the global tournament.
