Dhakshineswar Suresh Outplays Sumit Nagal as Kites Lift First-Ever WTL Trophy

Date:

Dhakshineswar Suresh delivered a composed and powerful performance under pressure to overcome seasoned campaigner Sumit Nagal, sealing Kites’ maiden World Tennis League title on Saturday. The thrilling final at the SM Krishna Tennis Stadium ended with Kites edging past Eagles 21–19, marking a historic moment for the team.

Entering the decisive men’s singles clash, Kites held a narrow 15–13 lead, setting the stage for a tense showdown. Both players displayed remarkable composure, holding serve through the opening games with a mix of aggressive baseline play and tactical shot-making. Dhakshineswar relied on his booming serves and heavy forehands, while Nagal countered with sharp angles and consistency.

The contest went into a tie-break where Nagal surged ahead early. However, Dhakshineswar showed resilience, turning the momentum in his favour to clinch a crucial 5–4 advantage. His serve proved decisive at the business end, allowing him to close out the match and secure the championship for Kites. The victory also served as redemption after his earlier tie-break loss to Nagal in the group stage.

The triumph was particularly emotional for the 25-year-old, with his father watching from the stands. Dhakshineswar acknowledged the sacrifices made by his family, crediting their support for the milestone achievement. Teammate Nick Kyrgios praised the effort, highlighting the collective teamwork and Dhakshineswar’s clutch performance in the final moments.

Earlier in the final, Marta Kostyuk gave Kites a strong start by defeating Shrivalli Bhamidipaty 6–4 in women’s singles. Although Eagles struck back in mixed doubles, Kites regained control with a dominant win in men’s doubles, ultimately clinching the title in a hard-fought finale.
