Brazil Triumphs Over Spain 4-2 to Secure Olympic Final Spot Against USA; World Champions Spain to Face Germany for Bronze

Date:

Brazil has advanced to the final of the Olympic women’s soccer tournament after a thrilling 4-2 victory over reigning world champion Spain on Tuesday. This sets up a highly anticipated showdown with the United States.

In a game held at the Stade de Marseille, goals from Gabi Portilho, Adriana, and Kerolin, coupled with an own-goal by Spain’s Irene Paredes, secured Brazil’s place in the final. Brazil’s early dominance was marked by Paredes’ own goal in the sixth minute, putting them ahead. Gabi Portilho doubled the lead just before halftime. Adriana’s header in the 71st minute seemed to seal the win, but Spain fought back with a goal from Salma Paralluelo in the 85th minute and a near-miss from Alexia Putellas.

Despite a late push by Spain, Kerolin’s goal during stoppage time ensured Brazil’s victory. Paralluelo added another goal for Spain, but it was too late to change the outcome.

Brazilian star Marta, who missed the quarterfinals and semifinals due to suspension, will have the chance to end her illustrious international career with a gold medal. Angelina, leading the Brazilian squad, emphasized the importance of the win and the need to focus on the final against the USA.

Spain, the reigning world champions, will now compete for the bronze medal against Germany in Lyon. Spanish forward Jennifer Hermoso remains optimistic about the challenge ahead, highlighting the significance of an Olympic medal.

Brazil’s coach Arthur Elias praised the team’s young talent and tactical prowess, expressing pride in their performance. The final, set to take place at Parc des Princes in Paris, will see Brazil aiming to overcome their past defeats to the USA in the 2004 and 2008 Olympic finals.
