Xiaomi is preparing to unveil its next flagship smartphone, the Xiaomi 17 Ultra, in China on December 25. Ahead of the official launch, new details have emerged highlighting a major leap in smartphone photography, driven by an upgraded Leica-powered camera system and continuous optical zoom technology.
The Xiaomi 17 Ultra will feature a premium Leica-backed rear camera setup led by a 1-inch Light and Shadow Master main sensor. This camera uses advanced LOFIC ultra-high dynamic range technology designed to significantly enhance low-light performance while preserving highlights and shadows more accurately in high-contrast scenes. The same hardware innovation is expected to improve HDR video recording by adjusting exposure on a frame-by-frame basis, delivering cleaner night-time footage.
One of the standout upgrades is a new 200-megapixel Leica telephoto camera that introduces true continuous optical zoom. Unlike traditional smartphone zoom systems that rely on digital cropping, this lens supports optical zoom output from 75mm to 100mm while maintaining full image resolution. Built with a Leica APO-certified lens and a dual floating optical structure, the telephoto camera is engineered to follow professional camera design principles and offers multiple portrait-friendly focal lengths.
In terms of design, the Xiaomi 17 Ultra will be available in black white and a special Starry Sky Green finish that incorporates ore particles to create a shimmering effect. The phone measures just 8.29mm in thickness, making it Xiaomi’s slimmest Ultra device to date. A large flat display with refined edges and a prominent Leica-branded camera module complete the premium look.
With cutting-edge imaging hardware a sleek profile and Leica collaboration at its core the Xiaomi 17 Ultra is positioned to be one of the most camera-focused smartphones launching this year.
