Anaconda 2025 Review: A Self-Aware Reboot That Struggles to Entertain

Date:

Hollywood’s ongoing obsession with revisiting old titles continues with Anaconda 2025, a film that tries to balance horror and comedy while openly acknowledging the absurdity of its own premise. Inspired by the cult status of the 1997 original, this new version attempts a meta take on nostalgia-driven reboots but never fully commits to being funny thrilling or sharp.

The story follows Doug played by Jack Black a once-hopeful filmmaker now reduced to shooting wedding videos. He is convinced by his childhood friend Griff portrayed by Paul Rudd a struggling actor to join him on a low-budget attempt to remake Anaconda. Along with longtime friends Claire and Kenny the group travels to the Amazon hoping to revive their creative spark. Instead they stumble into illegal mining operations suspicious locals and a real giant anaconda turning their passion project into a fight for survival.

The film’s strongest asset is its cast. Paul Rudd delivers a familiar understated performance capturing quiet frustration and insecurity while Jack Black brings moments of energy that briefly elevate the satire. Steve Zahn stands out as Kenny injecting genuine humor through his constant incompetence. When the film focuses on middle-aged regret friendship and missed opportunities it shows flashes of warmth and charm.

Unfortunately the film rarely capitalizes on its premise. The comedy lacks bite the satire feels underdeveloped and the horror elements are muted. Despite being larger the snake feels less threatening due to restrained direction and flat action sequences. The PG-13 tone removes tension and the emotional beats fall short because the characters are thinly written.

In the end Anaconda 2025 is aware of its own redundancy but mistakes that awareness for substance. It neither fully embraces parody nor delivers memorable thrills resulting in a film that is passable but forgettable. It slides by without the impact that either strong comedy or effective horror could have delivered.
