Jessica Pegula Triumphs Over Amanda Anisimova to Secure Consecutive WTA Canada Titles

Date:

Jessica Pegula, ranked sixth globally, claimed her sixth WTA title after defeating Amanda Anisimova in a thrilling all-American final at the WTA Toronto Masters. The match ended with Pegula emerging victorious with a scoreline of 6-3, 2-6, 6-1. This victory marked Pegula’s second WTA title of the year, following her success in Berlin this past June. Notably, Pegula has become the first player since 2000 to win back-to-back championships at this prestigious Canadian event.

Pegula, visibly emotional, expressed her overwhelming joy, stating, “It’s unbelievable. I wanted this so much, and I’m just filled with happiness.” She shared that the victory holds special significance, as she has now won the title in both of the event’s alternating host cities, Montreal and Toronto, both of which are close to her roots in Buffalo, New York. With her grandparents hailing from both Toronto and Montreal, Pegula dedicated a title to each of them.

This win extends Pegula’s perfect record against Anisimova to 3-0, with her previous win earlier this year in Charleston. The match started with Pegula breaking Anisimova’s serve and maintaining her dominance to secure the first set in just 27 minutes. However, Anisimova fought back in the second set, capitalizing on Pegula’s errors to level the match. In the decisive third set, Pegula regained control, breaking Anisimova early and maintaining her lead to secure the title after 87 minutes of intense play.

Reflecting on her achievement, Pegula said, “I’m thrilled to have made it through the week and to defend my title. It’s truly an honor.” Anisimova, ranked 132nd in the world, became the lowest-ranked finalist at the Canadian tournament in four decades. Despite the loss, her performance this week, including victories over four top-20 players, ensures her return to the top 50 rankings. Anisimova, who took a nine-month break from tennis due to mental health struggles, spoke about her renewed approach to the sport, focusing on enjoying each day and not taking things too seriously, which has brought her newfound joy in the game.
