Harshit Rana Responds Strongly to New-Ball Bowling Criticism After Match-Winning ODI Performance

Date:

Harshit Rana delivered a composed yet impactful performance in the first ODI against New Zealand at the BCA Stadium in Vadodara silencing critics both on and off the field. The young Indian bowling all-rounder played a key role in India’s four-wicket victory by claiming two crucial wickets and contributing a valuable 29 runs with the bat in a challenging chase of 301.

Despite India not striking early with the new ball Rana rose to the occasion by breaking a threatening opening partnership between Devon Conway and Henry Nicholls who had added 117 runs for New Zealand. His timely breakthroughs shifted momentum back in India’s favour and ensured the visitors could not fully capitalise on their strong start. Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna also chipped in with two wickets each helping restrict New Zealand to 300 for 8 in their allotted fifty overs.

During the post-match press conference Rana was asked about India’s inability to take early wickets with the new ball especially in the absence of Jasprit Bumrah. The question did not sit well with the 24-year-old who firmly defended the bowling unit. Rana highlighted that run control with the new ball was effective and stressed that wickets do not always need to fall immediately in ODIs to build pressure. He pointed out that Siraj bowled with discipline and that dismissals can come later in the innings once the batters are forced into mistakes.

Rana’s response reflected growing confidence and maturity as he continues to establish himself at the international level after being selected across formats last year. His all-round contribution nearly earned him the Player of the Match award though the honour went to Virat Kohli who anchored the chase with a classy 93. Captain Shubman Gill added 56 while Shreyas Iyer’s 49 provided crucial support as India reached the target with six balls remaining.

With this win India take a 1–0 lead in the ODI series and will look to build on the momentum when they face New Zealand in the second ODI on January 14 at the Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Rajkot.
