Argentina’s preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup have been overshadowed by serious controversy as the Argentine Football Association finds itself at the centre of an ongoing corruption investigation. With Lionel Messi and the reigning champions gearing up to defend their global title, developments off the pitch have raised questions about governance stability within Argentine football at a crucial time.
A federal investigation into the finances of the Argentine Football Association was launched in December last year, triggering widespread scrutiny of senior officials. Reports indicate that federation president Claudio Tapia and his close adviser and treasurer Pablo Toviggino are key figures in the case, which is examining alleged financial irregularities and asset accumulation linked to the organisation.
The controversy intensified in March 2024 when former Argentina international Carlos Tevez publicly accused football officials of corruption through a social media post. Tevez alleged secretive financial activities including hidden cash and unexplained assets. His remarks prompted authorities to open a criminal complaint, focusing on a luxury property located in Pilar which soon became central to the investigation.
As inquiries expanded, prosecutors reportedly identified links between the property and multiple individuals including a theatre producer a technology entrepreneur a real estate family partnership and a football promoter. Audits of businesses associated with Tapia and Toviggino ultimately led investigators to a vast ranch-style estate in Villa Rosa covering more than one million square feet.
The property reportedly includes a regulation football stadium seven additional pitches a heliport and an extensive collection of high-end vehicles. Authorities seized dozens of luxury and vintage cars motorcycles and a Ferrari F430 valued at approximately half a million US dollars. The scale of the assets has further fuelled speculation regarding the origins of the wealth.
Local political figures have also weighed in on the matter. Matias Yofe president of the Coalicion Civica branch in Pilar stated that several former employees of the estate described the property as being operated by AFA leadership. According to these accounts senior officials were seen using facilities freely hosting guests and arriving by helicopter reinforcing suspicions of ownership.
While no final conclusions have yet been announced the investigation continues to cast a shadow over Argentine football administration. For fans and players alike attention now turns to whether the ongoing legal process could distract the national team as it prepares for one of the most anticipated World Cup title defences in recent history.
