UAE Issues Guidelines for Hag Al Laila Celebration February 3

The United Arab Emirates has released official guidance ahead of the traditional Emirati celebration Hag Al Laila, which falls on the night of Tuesday February 3. The UAE Fatwa Council has confirmed that celebrating the occasion is permissible under Sharia law, provided customs do not contradict religious principles.

Hag Al Laila is a long-standing Emirati tradition held roughly two weeks before Ramadan where children go door-to-door receiving sweets from neighbours. Families and community members often exchange gifts to foster joy strengthen bonds and support family and community relations. Popular venues such as Global Village are hosting special family-friendly events and activities to mark the celebration.

The Fatwa Council stated that the night of the middle of Sha’ban is legitimate and that customs bringing happiness and joy are allowed when aligned with Sharia. Giving gifts to children relatives and neighbours is encouraged to enhance social cohesion and reinforce family ties. Celebrating the night with worship is recommended and those who choose to observe or abstain are both considered in accordance with tradition.
