Bloated in the Morning UK Doctor Explains Whether Warm or Cold Water Helps Your Gut Wake Up

Date:

Waking up with a swollen or uncomfortable stomach is a common issue for many people and it often starts before the day even begins. According to a UK-based surgeon and health educator Dr Karan Rajan a simple morning habit like drinking water soon after waking can help reduce bloating and support better digestion. The key factor however is not the temperature of the water but hydration itself.

Dr Rajan explains that after seven to eight hours of sleep the body is usually mildly dehydrated. This lack of fluids can slow gut movement causing stool to move more slowly and gas to linger which can worsen bloating in the morning. Drinking water helps rehydrate the digestive system soften stool and improve overall gut motility.

Addressing the common belief that hot water works better than cold Dr Rajan points to limited research suggesting cold water may slightly slow stomach emptying but emphasizes that the effect is minimal and not practical in real life. What truly matters is drinking water in any form as it activates the gastrocolic reflex a natural response that signals the colon to get moving once food or liquid enters an empty stomach.

He adds that warm drinks may gently stimulate this reflex while coffee tends to trigger it more strongly. Beyond hydration Dr Rajan highlights the importance of light physical movement and exposure to natural morning sunlight to help regulate bowel rhythms. If warm water feels more comforting and helps ease bloating it can be a useful habit but consistency with hydration and lifestyle cues plays a much bigger role in long term gut health.
