Raveena Tandon has spoken candidly about a pivotal career decision that saw her step away from Karan Johar’s iconic debut film Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. The actor confirmed that she was offered the role that eventually went to Rani Mukerji but chose not to accept it, explaining that the timing did not align with her professional goals at the time.
In a recent interaction, Raveena shared that although she shared a close bond with Karan Johar and genuinely admired the project, she was not ready to take on a secondary role after establishing herself as a leading heroine in the 1990s. Coming off the success of films like Mohra, she felt it was important to maintain her position as a solo lead rather than shift gears midway through her career.
She explained that turning down certain films was a conscious and often difficult choice. Restarting her journey as a principal actress meant carefully selecting roles that reinforced her identity on screen, even if it resulted in fewer appearances or songs. According to Raveena, the decision was not about the quality of the film but about protecting the trajectory she had worked hard to build.
Reflecting on the casting, Raveena acknowledged that the role suited Rani Mukerji perfectly. As a newcomer at the time, Rani benefited immensely from the opportunity, and the film played a defining role in launching her career. Raveena added that while the character flourished in Rani’s hands, it would not have been the right fit for her own phase of life and career then.
Raveena also touched upon her broader journey in Bollywood, noting how her popularity as a dancer led to an influx of special song appearances rather than substantial acting parts. Determined to avoid being typecast, she made the tough call to decline many offers and focus on meaningful roles. She is now set to appear in Welcome To Jungle, sharing screen space with Akshay Kumar, Suniel Shetty and an ensemble cast.
