Hyderabad neurologist Dr Sudhir Kumar warns about effects of sleeping six hours nightly for two weeks

Date:

Many people believe that staying active eating well and exercising regularly are the main pillars of a healthy lifestyle while sleep is often pushed aside. However according to Hyderabad based neurologist Dr Sudhir Kumar getting fewer hours of sleep than required can quietly impact brain function even when the body feels normal.

In a recent social media post Dr Kumar explained what happens when a person sleeps for only six hours per night for two consecutive weeks. While individuals may feel physically fine research shows that their cognitive performance can decline significantly. In controlled studies participants who limited sleep to six hours nightly for 14 days performed similarly to people who had stayed awake continuously for 24 to 48 hours.

What makes this concerning is that most participants did not realise their performance had dropped. Sleep deprivation does not always create an obvious sensation of fatigue or confusion. Instead it may create a false sense of normalcy or even confidence while brain function gradually weakens.

According to Dr Kumar the brain begins to show measurable changes under restricted sleep. These include reduced attention span slower reaction times weakened working memory and impaired decision making ability. Over time this pattern creates cumulative neurological stress rather than improving productivity.

Experts generally recommend that adults aim for seven to nine hours of sleep per night to maintain cognitive health emotional balance and overall wellbeing. Sleep is not simply rest but an active repair phase during which the brain processes information consolidates memory and restores neural pathways.

Guidelines from the Mayo Clinic outline recommended sleep duration by age. Infants require between 12 and 16 hours toddlers need 11 to 14 hours young children need 10 to 13 hours school age children require 9 to 12 hours teenagers need 8 to 10 hours and adults should aim for at least seven hours per night.

Medical professionals emphasise that consistent sleep restriction even if it feels manageable can have long term effects on concentration mood and cognitive efficiency. Adequate sleep remains a daily requirement for healthy brain function rather than an optional luxury.
