Can creatine supplements worsen Endometriosis? Dr Karan Rajan explains current research

Date:

Creatine is one of the most commonly used supplements in the fitness world and is widely known for helping improve strength stamina and athletic performance. However some people living with Endometriosis have recently questioned whether creatine supplementation could potentially worsen symptoms or influence the progression of the disease.

Addressing the growing online discussion Dr Karan Rajan recently shared insights explaining what scientific research currently suggests about the relationship between creatine and endometriosis.

According to the surgeon there are a couple of recent scientific studies that appear to connect creatine with biological processes linked to endometriosis. One study suggested that creatine might influence immune cells found in the abdominal lining known as peritoneal macrophages. These immune cells could potentially shift into a state that helps endometriosis lesions survive and develop.

Another piece of research indicated that creatine might help abnormal endometrial cells resist a biological process called ferroptosis which is a form of cell death. If these abnormal cells avoid this process they may remain alive longer and potentially multiply.

However Dr Rajan emphasises that these studies were conducted using mouse models and laboratory cell experiments rather than human clinical trials. This distinction is extremely important because results observed in animal models or cell cultures do not always translate directly to how the human body behaves.

Human physiology particularly the immune system is far more complex than laboratory conditions. In addition these studies did not examine real world creatine supplementation patterns such as typical dosage exercise habits diet hormonal balance genetic differences or overall inflammation levels. All of these factors may influence how the body reacts to supplements.

Another factor discussed by the surgeon is the relationship between creatinine and endometriosis. Creatinine is a natural by product created when creatine is broken down in the body and is commonly used as a marker for kidney function. Some research shows that people with endometriosis may have slightly higher creatinine levels on average.

Dr Rajan explains that this does not mean creatine supplements cause or worsen endometriosis. Instead it appears to reflect naturally occurring metabolic processes within the body rather than a direct cause and effect relationship linked to supplementation.

At the same time numerous human studies have found that creatine can provide a range of potential benefits including improved muscle strength better endurance reduced fatigue enhanced cognitive performance improved sleep and better blood flow. These factors may help improve overall wellbeing and quality of life when used appropriately.

The surgeon stresses that supplements should always be approached as a personalised decision. What works well for one person may not work the same way for another especially with complex health conditions such as endometriosis which can vary significantly between individuals.

Current research in this area is still developing and the available studies are primarily designed to generate scientific hypotheses rather than provide direct medical guidance. Anyone considering creatine supplementation should evaluate how their body responds and consult healthcare professionals if they have specific medical concerns.
