Harry Maguire Reflects on Ruben Amorim’s Manchester United Spell Says Tactics Failed to Deliver Results

Date:

Harry Maguire has shared his honest thoughts on the tenure of former Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim, acknowledging that while the coach brought strong ideas to the club, they ultimately did not translate into success on the pitch.

Amorim’s time at Old Trafford came to an end in January after a challenging 14 month period marked by inconsistent performances and heavy scrutiny over his tactical approach. During his spell, the team managed just 24 wins from 63 matches, highlighting the struggles faced under his leadership.

Despite the disappointing results, Maguire spoke positively about his personal experience working under the Portuguese manager. He noted that Amorim showed confidence in him, regularly including him in the starting lineup whenever he was fit.

Maguire emphasised that Amorim possessed clear footballing ideas and a strong vision but admitted that those strategies failed to click within the Manchester United setup. He expressed confidence that the manager will find success elsewhere in his career, describing him as a young coach with significant potential.

The defender also pointed out that players must share responsibility for the team’s poor performances, suggesting that the lack of results was not solely down to the manager. According to him, Amorim still deserves recognition for helping shape a more balanced and competitive squad during his time at the club.

Statistically, Amorim’s record reflects the difficulties he encountered. He averaged just 1.23 points per game in the Premier League, one of the lowest figures for a Manchester United manager in the modern era. His league record included 15 wins 19 defeats and 13 draws, while overall results showed a high loss rate compared to previous managers.

Although his tenure did not bring the expected success, Amorim’s influence on squad development and long term direction has been acknowledged by players like Maguire. The discussion around his time at Manchester United continues to spark debate among fans and analysts alike.
