Warner Bros. has officially pushed back the release of its upcoming live-action hybrid film Animal Friends, starring Ryan Reynolds and Jason Momoa. The road trip adventure is now scheduled to arrive in theaters on January 22 2027, marking another delay in its release timeline.
The project was initially planned for an October 2025 debut before being moved to May 2026. With the latest shift, the studio appears to be taking additional time to position the film more strategically in the release calendar.
Directed by Peter Atencio, known for films like Keanu and The Machine, the movie blends live-action storytelling with hybrid elements. The screenplay has been written by Kevin Burrows and Matt Mider, bringing together a mix of comedy and adventure.
The film boasts a strong ensemble cast including Aubrey Plaza Dan Levy Addison Rae Lil Rel Howery and Ellie Bamber alongside Reynolds and Momoa. Backed by major production houses such as Legendary Maximum Effort and Prime Focus Studios, the film has generated considerable buzz despite its shifting release dates.
Originally developed under Sony Pictures, the project later moved to Warner Bros. in 2024 as part of a broader collaboration with Legendary. This transition, along with multiple scheduling changes, reflects the evolving strategy behind the film’s rollout.
Ryan Reynolds continues to maintain a strong presence in Hollywood following the massive success of Deadpool and Wolverine in 2024, which ranked among the top global box office hits of the year. Meanwhile, Jason Momoa remains busy with several high-profile projects, including upcoming titles like Supergirl Street Fighter and Dune Part Three.
With a star-studded cast and a unique concept, Animal Friends remains one of the more anticipated releases, now aiming to capture audience attention in early 2027.
