Runner’s Poop Explained: Why You Feel the Urge to Go While Running and How to Prevent It

Experiencing a sudden need to use the bathroom during a run is more common than many people think. Often referred to as “runner’s poop,” this issue can interrupt workouts and cause discomfort or embarrassment. However, health experts say there are clear reasons behind it—and practical ways to reduce the chances of it happening.

According to gastroenterologist Dr Joseph Salhab, this urge occurs due to the body’s natural response to physical activity. Running stimulates hormone release that activates the digestive system. Combined with gravity and the repetitive motion of running, this speeds up intestinal movement and can trigger a bowel movement during or shortly after exercise.

Diet also plays a significant role. Consuming foods high in sugar caffeine or fat before a run may intensify the digestive response. These can increase gut sensitivity and make the urge more likely.

To help manage this condition, experts recommend making simple adjustments to pre-run habits. One effective strategy is choosing low-fibre carbohydrate foods such as white rice plain pasta boiled potatoes or ripe bananas. These foods are easier to digest and should ideally be consumed two to three hours before running to allow proper digestion.

Another helpful step is to try and empty your bowels before heading out. This reduces pressure in the digestive system and lowers the risk of needing a bathroom mid-run.

Avoiding heavy meals before exercise is also important. Large portions or foods high in fibre fat or dairy can overstimulate the gut. Limiting caffeine intake before running may further help in preventing sudden urges.

Clothing can also make a difference. Wearing loose and comfortable outfits helps avoid unnecessary pressure on the abdomen, which can otherwise contribute to gut stimulation during movement.

Lastly, it’s always wise to be prepared. Having a backup plan such as access to restrooms or someone who can assist if needed can make your running experience less stressful.

While runner’s poop is a natural physiological response, understanding its triggers and making small lifestyle changes can help you stay focused and comfortable during your runs.
