FIFA Declines Iran’s Request to Change World Cup 2026 Venues, Confirms Matches Will Stay in USA

Date:

FIFA has officially turned down Iran’s appeal to relocate its FIFA World Cup 2026 group-stage matches, confirming that the fixtures will proceed in the United States as originally planned. FIFA president Gianni Infantino reiterated that the tournament schedule will remain unchanged despite concerns raised by the Iranian football authorities.

Speaking during a recent international friendly, Infantino made it clear that all matches will be held according to the official draw. Iran is set to compete in Group G, with all three of its matches scheduled in the United States. The team will begin its campaign against New Zealand in Los Angeles on June 15, followed by a match against Belgium at the same venue on June 21. Their final group-stage game will be played against Egypt in Seattle on June 27.

Iran’s request to shift venues emerged amid rising political tensions between Iran and the United States in recent months. The country’s football federation had proposed moving the matches to Mexico, which is one of the co-host nations alongside the United States and Canada. The appeal was supported by comments from Mexican leadership expressing openness to hosting the fixtures.

Concerns intensified following remarks by former US President Donald Trump, who indicated that while Iranian players would be allowed to participate, there were questions surrounding their safety. Although he later clarified that players would not face entry restrictions, Iranian football officials referenced these statements while pushing for a change in venues.

Despite these developments, FIFA has maintained its stance, emphasizing that no alterations will be made to the tournament schedule. Infantino also expressed confidence in Iran’s participation, highlighting the team’s strength and confirming that preparations remain on track.

In a recent friendly match held in Turkey, Iran’s players paid tribute to victims of a tragic incident back home by wearing black armbands and carrying symbolic items during the national anthem. The gesture honored those affected by a deadly strike that reportedly claimed many lives, including students and teachers.

As the World Cup approaches, Iran is expected to proceed with its campaign as scheduled, with matches set to take place across designated venues in the United States.
