Inside ‘Project Hail Mary’: How James Ortiz Brought Rocky the Alien to Life Alongside Ryan Gosling

Date:

James Ortiz has emerged as a standout creative force behind Project Hail Mary, the sci-fi blockbuster that has captivated audiences worldwide. The New York-based puppeteer and theater artist played a crucial role in shaping Rocky, the unique rock-like alien whose bond with Ryan Gosling’s character forms the emotional core of the film.

Working extensively on set in London, Ortiz not only operated the intricate puppet but also voiced the character, delivering a performance that blended technical precision with emotional depth. The film, which has crossed $322 million globally, relies heavily on the chemistry between Ortiz and Gosling, developed through long improvisational sessions that often stretched up to 45 minutes.

Despite being a high-budget production filled with visual spectacle, directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller encouraged a more organic approach. They allowed scenes to unfold naturally, giving Ortiz and Gosling the freedom to experiment and build authentic interactions, much like a live theater performance.

Ortiz secured the role after an audition where he chose to use his own puppet instead of the one provided, a decision that ultimately helped define Rocky’s personality. His collaboration with Gosling quickly evolved into a creative partnership, with both actors committing to spontaneity and emotional realism in their scenes.

To bring Rocky to life, Ortiz worked alongside special effects expert Neal Scanlan and assembled a team of puppeteers to manage the complex five-limbed character. The process required weeks of preparation before filming began, followed by months of demanding shoots that tested both physical and mental endurance.

Interestingly, the filmmakers initially considered replacing Ortiz’s voice with a more recognizable actor. However, his performance proved so integral to the character that they ultimately retained his voice for the final cut, preserving the authenticity created on set.

The film combines practical puppetry with advanced animation, seamlessly blending real and digital elements. While the puppet was used extensively, visual effects enhanced moments that required greater movement or scale.

One of the most memorable aspects of the film is the evolving friendship between Rocky and Gosling’s Ryland Grace, culminating in an emotional farewell scene shaped through improvisation. These spontaneous creative choices added depth and sincerity, making the relationship feel genuine to audiences.

With discussions of a possible sequel already underway, Ortiz’s work as Rocky may continue in future installments. For now, his contribution stands as a remarkable example of how performance and innovation can come together to create a truly unforgettable cinematic character.
