Bong Joon Ho Unveils ‘Ally’: First Details of His Animated Film Set for 2027 Release

Date:

Oscar-winning filmmaker Bong Joon Ho has officially revealed key details about his long-awaited entry into animated cinema, offering fans a first glimpse into the ambitious project. Titled Ally, the film marks the director’s debut in 3D animation and is scheduled for a global theatrical release in 2027.

The project, which has been in development since 2019, is now taking clearer shape with the unveiling of its storyline, creative team and early visual preview. Bong co-wrote the screenplay with rising Korean filmmaker Jason Yu, continuing his tradition of collaborating with emerging talent.

At the center of the story is Ally, a charming and inquisitive piglet squid living deep in the unexplored waters of the South Pacific. Dreaming of reaching the surface and becoming part of a wildlife documentary, her life takes an unexpected turn when a mysterious aircraft crashes into the ocean. This event disrupts her peaceful habitat and pushes her into an adventurous journey alongside a group of unusual yet loyal companions.

The narrative blends emotional storytelling with humor and action, exploring themes of friendship courage and the connection between humans and marine life. Set against visually rich underwater environments, the film aims to deliver a family-friendly experience while maintaining Bong’s signature depth and creativity.

The production brings together a global team of artists and filmmakers from multiple countries. Notable contributors include experienced animation professionals who have worked on major international projects, while visual effects studio DNEG is handling the film’s 3D animation.

Production is being overseen by long-time collaborator Seo Woo-sik, marking another partnership following earlier films. Financing and distribution are backed by major industry players, ensuring a wide international release across multiple regions.

Known for genre-defining works such as Parasite, Snowpiercer and The Host, Bong Joon Ho has described this animated venture as a passion project years in the making. Inspired by deep-sea life and imaginative storytelling, the film represents one of his most ambitious creative undertakings to date.

With a reported high production budget and strong global interest, Ally is already generating significant anticipation ahead of its planned debut.
