A new comedy film influenced by the journey and legacy of iconic rock band Green Day is officially moving forward with a fresh identity and distribution backing. The movie, previously known as New Years Rev, has now been renamed Nimrods and has been acquired by Inaugural Entertainment for release.
Directed and written by Lee Kirk, the film features a strong cast including Mason Thames Mckenna Grace Jenna Fischer Angela Kinsey Sean Gunn Bobby Lee and Fred Armisen. The project originally premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2025 and has since generated interest for its unique mix of music humor and coming of age storytelling.
The storyline follows three teenage friends who set off on a chaotic road trip after mistakenly believing their small band has been invited to open for Green Day on New Year’s Eve. The narrative draws inspiration from the band’s early days when they toured in a van before achieving massive success with their breakthrough album Dookie released in 1994.
Additional cast members include Kylr Coffman Ryan Foust Ignacio Diaz Silverio and Keen Ruffalo. The film is closely connected to Green Day as the band members Billie Joe Armstrong Mike Dirnt and Tre Cool are actively involved as producers alongside Tim Perell. Executive production includes key names from Live Nation Studios further strengthening the project’s industry backing.
The title Nimrods pays homage to Green Day’s 1997 album Nimrod, which featured hit tracks and achieved major commercial success. The film aims to capture the spirit of the band’s fan culture blending nostalgia music and youthful ambition into a relatable cinematic experience.
