Lionel Messi Hints at Retirement After Scoring Hat-Trick Against Bolivia: ‘These Might Be My Final Matches’

Date:

Lionel Messi delivered a spectacular performance during the FIFA World Cup qualifiers, leading Argentina to a commanding 6-0 victory over Bolivia with a remarkable hat-trick. The Argentine superstar showcased his talent in front of a supportive crowd in Buenos Aires, contributing significantly to the match with three goals and two assists. This game marked Messi’s second appearance since recovering from an injury he sustained during the Copa America Final earlier this year.

With this hat-trick, Messi equaled Cristiano Ronaldo’s record of 10 hat-tricks in international football. Argentina currently leads the qualifiers with 22 points, bouncing back after a loss to Colombia and a draw with Venezuela in previous matches.

Messi opened the scoring in the 19th minute, capitalizing on a defensive blunder from Marcelo Suarez. He later assisted Lautaro Martinez in the 43rd minute and Julian Alvarez in the 45 + 3rd minute, solidifying Argentina’s dominance. Messi finished the match with two additional goals in the closing minutes, completing his hat-trick.

After the game, the 37-year-old expressed his emotions about playing in front of the home fans, stating, “It feels wonderful to be here and feel the love from Argentina’s supporters. Hearing them chant my name is truly moving. We all cherish this bond with the fans and love playing at home.”

In a surprising revelation, Messi indicated he might be nearing the end of his illustrious career, although he has not set a specific timeline for his future. “I haven’t established any deadlines regarding my career. I’m simply enjoying this moment and embracing all the love I receive because I recognize these could be my last matches,” he remarked.

He also shared insights about the current stage of his career, noting that being around younger teammates brings him joy. “Being in the presence of younger players makes me feel young again. I often find myself acting playfully because I feel at ease. As long as I can keep contributing to the team, I intend to remain and enjoy my time with the national team,” he stated.

Argentina’s coach Lionel Scaloni expressed his desire for Messi to continue playing, stating, “All I ask is for him to keep playing for as long as he can. It’s a pleasure to watch him on the field; he never fails to impress us.”
