Acclaimed filmmaker Christopher Nolan has described the production of his upcoming film The Odyssey as intensely demanding, though ultimately fulfilling. The director shared his experience while unveiling the first footage of the film at CinemaCon held in Las Vegas.
The preview reportedly featured a dramatic sequence inspired by the legendary Trojan horse, earning strong reactions from attendees. Speaking about the filming process, Christopher Nolan explained that the project pushed the cast and crew through extreme conditions, including shooting across mountains, caves, open seas, and unpredictable weather environments.
He highlighted that such challenges were fitting for the scale and nature of the story, which is rooted in the ancient epic by Homer. The narrative follows the long and perilous journey of Odysseus as he attempts to return home after the Trojan War.
One of the film’s most notable achievements is its technical execution. The Odyssey has been entirely shot using IMAX 70mm film, marking a first in cinematic history. Nolan noted that this milestone fulfills a long-standing ambition to fully immerse audiences using large-format filmmaking techniques, something he has been evolving since projects like The Dark Knight.
The film stars Matt Damon in the lead role as Odysseus, alongside Tom Holland portraying his son Telemachus. The ensemble cast also features Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Lupita Nyong’o, Robert Pattinson, Charlize Theron, Jon Bernthal, Benny Safdie, John Leguizamo, and Elliot Page.
Serving as a follow-up to Nolan’s Oscar-winning Oppenheimer, the film is among the most anticipated releases of the year and is scheduled to arrive in cinemas on July 17, 2026.
