During the conversation, Andrew shared that Elmo was his mother’s favorite character. He began, “I’m just thinking about my mom today. She passed away not too long ago and you know, I just miss her a lot.” Lynn Garfield, Andrew’s mother, succumbed to pancreatic cancer in 2019.
Andrew continued, “Sadness is kind of a gift. It’s kind of a lovely thing to feel in a way, because it means that you really loved somebody when you miss them. And when I miss someone, when I miss my mom, I remember all the cuddles I used to get from her. All the hugs I used to get from her. It makes me feel close to her when I miss her, in a strange sort of way.”
Elmo, expressing gratitude for Andrew’s honesty, said he would keep Andrew’s mother in his thoughts. The actor, visibly moved, appreciated the sentiment, especially since Elmo was a cherished character for his mother.
Andrew Garfield stars alongside Florence Pugh in the romantic comedy We Live In Time, directed by BAFTA-winning filmmaker John Crowley.
