Actor Angelina Jolie has found a deep emotional resonance with the legendary opera singer Maria Callas as she embodies her in the upcoming biopic, Maria. Speaking with People magazine at the premiere during the American Film Institute Festival in Hollywood, Jolie opened up about her character and her personal reflections on solitude and commitment. She also shared how playing Callas helped her confront parts of herself, including the complexities of dedication.
At the Venice International Film Festival’s photocall for Maria, Jolie reflected on Callas’ solitary journey, observing, “I share a certain loneliness with Callas that stems from our mutual dedication to our work.” At 49, Jolie finds common ground in the demands of a relentless work ethic, admitting, “I may be many things, but I am a very hard worker.” This shared devotion highlights the intensity and discipline both women have exhibited in their careers.
Jolie acknowledged the emotional toll of the role, adding, “It’s very personal, so I won’t say much, but there’s definitely an aspect of loneliness and an unbreakable work ethic.” She noted that both she and Callas likely see themselves primarily as artists driven by their craft, often critical of their own work.
Directed by Pablo Larraín, celebrated for films like Jackie and Spencer, Maria delves into Callas’ retreat to Paris after a life of fame and challenges in the public spotlight. The cast includes accomplished actors Kodi Smit-McPhee, Alba Rohrwacher, Pierfrancesco Favino, and Valeria Golino.
Maria Callas, who passed away in Paris in 1977 at 53, remains an iconic figure in opera, her story striking a chord with audiences worldwide. The film, receiving a standing ovation at its New York Film Festival premiere in September, has heightened anticipation for its release.
During the festival, Jolie shared her appreciation, stating, “I’m thrilled to be here and to stand alongside these wonderful, talented friends.” According to People magazine, she added, “This film is a tribute to those whose stories we are privileged to share, and to the love they held for their art.”
Maria will be released in select theaters on November 27 and available for streaming on Netflix starting December 11.
