LeBron James experienced a heartfelt moment when he watched his son Bronny score his first NBA points. In what was only the second NBA game to feature a father-son duo, LeBron checked out in the fourth quarter and took a seat to witness his son Bronny’s milestone.
Despite the homecoming excitement for LeBron and Bronny, the Los Angeles Lakers suffered a 110-134 loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers. The game marked Bronny James’ first NBA basket for the Lakers, although it wasn’t enough to turn the tide. The Cavaliers’ Evan Mobley scored 25 points, and Donovan Mitchell contributed 24 points and seven assists, leading Cleveland to a 5-0 start this season.
The match held special significance as the Cavaliers are currently enjoying their best start since the 2016-17 season, when LeBron wore the number 23 jersey for them. The Cleveland crowd showed their love for Bronny with chants of “We want Bronny!” as LeBron watched proudly from the bench.
Bronny made two assists before scoring his first professional basket with a 14-foot shot from the left corner, receiving a standing ovation from the crowd. Reflecting on the moment, Bronny said, “It was insane. Much more than I anticipated. The chants really got me. I was straight-faced, but I felt it and it felt pretty good.”
LeBron expressed his pride, saying, “To see him get his first NBA basket in this arena, where he grew up not too far away from here, that’s an unbelievable moment. Unbelievable moment for him, and for our family it’s just pretty cool to be a part of it.”
This game followed the historic moment last week when LeBron and his 20-year-old son became the first father-son duo to play in an NBA game. The Lakers have faced criticism for drafting Bronny, who was selected in the second round after playing one year at USC.
Cavaliers’ first team coach Kenny Atkinson commented, “It’s a beautiful story. Two kids of my own, I can’t even imagine. I enjoy playing in the backyard with my son. To do it on an NBA court? Beautiful story. I love it. I think we should celebrate it.”
