Manchester United has officially appointed Ruben Amorim as their new head coach, filling the vacancy left by Erik ten Hag. The Portuguese coach has signed a contract with United that extends until 2027, with an option for an additional year. Amorim will commence his duties with the team on November 11 (Monday).
In a statement, Manchester United expressed their excitement about the new appointment, stating, “Ruben is among the most dynamic and highly esteemed young coaches in European football. His impressive record as both a player and coach includes winning the Primeira Liga twice with Sporting CP; notably, the first title was the club’s first in nearly two decades.”
Ruud van Nistelrooy will remain in charge of the team until Ruben Amorim officially joins. Amorim has earned acclaim for his success with Sporting CP and his notable playing career primarily as a midfielder. He played for Belenenses and Benfica, joining the latter in 2008 and securing ten major titles, including three league championships, one Taca de Portugal, five Tacas da Liga, and one Supertaca Candido de Oliveira. He also represented Portugal in two FIFA World Cups, earning 14 caps.
After retiring in 2017, Amorim began his coaching career with Casa Pia in 2018. He then managed Braga B before taking over the first team in December 2019, where he won the 2020 Taca da Liga. In March 2020, he became the head coach of Sporting CP, becoming one of the most expensive managers ever. Under his leadership, Sporting CP won the Taca de Liga and Primeira Liga, ending a 19-year title drought. Amorim was named Primeira Liga’s Manager of the Year for the 2020-21 season and led Sporting CP to another league title in the 2023-24 season.
