Dan Burn’s England Call-Up Sparks World Cup Ambitions After Newcastle’s Historic Trophy Win

Date:

Dan Burn, who once thought international football was beyond his reach, is now setting his sights on the World Cup after earning a maiden call-up to the England squad. The Newcastle United defender joined the national team just a day after helping his boyhood club win their first domestic trophy in 70 years.

At 32 years old, Burn has had an unconventional journey to the top. From experiencing relegation with Darlington in League Two to playing a pivotal role in Newcastle’s Carabao Cup victory, his career has been filled with both challenges and triumphs. His recent performances caught the attention of England manager Thomas Tuchel, who selected him for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Albania and Latvia.

A Career-Defining Moment

Burn’s call-up came just days after he helped Newcastle secure a 2-1 win over Liverpool in the Carabao Cup final, scoring the opening goal and ending the club’s long wait for a major title. The timing of his selection made the achievement even more special.

“Definitely had worse weeks,” Burn joked. “The manager FaceTimed me on Tuesday and said they were considering calling me up. By Thursday night, I hadn’t heard anything, so I told my wife, ‘nothing’s going to happen.’ Then at 10 PM, I got a text asking if I was still awake. I replied immediately, and that’s when I knew it was happening.”

Burn, who will be making his first international appearance, is determined to prove himself. “I’m not here to just make up the numbers,” he said. “I believe I have what it takes to play at this level. I’ve felt that way for a long time.”

World Cup Dream Within Reach

Burn admitted that he once thought his England chances had passed him by, particularly during the 2022 World Cup, when he was playing left-back. “I felt I had a small chance, but not having any international experience worked against me. You can’t gain experience if you don’t get picked, so it was a tough situation,” he said.

However, the arrival of a new England coach reignited his hopes. “At 32, I thought it was too late, but when a new manager comes in, you never know,” he added. Now, with a spot in the squad, Burn is focused on making the most of the opportunity. “A week ago, the World Cup wasn’t even on my radar, but now it’s my ultimate goal. I know I have a lot to prove, but I’m ready to take on the challenge.”

Balancing Club and Country

Despite the excitement surrounding his England debut, Burn has put celebrations on hold to focus on the national team. “After the final, my mindset immediately switched. The team was celebrating, but I was ready to get to bed,” he laughed. “There will be time to celebrate later, maybe during the parade on Saturday. Right now, my focus is on this incredible opportunity.”

With his determination and experience, Burn is ready to make an impact on the international stage and fight for a place in England’s squad for the World Cup.
