Hollywood star Jack Black embraced the Minecraft universe while preparing for his role in the upcoming Minecraft movie, spending over 100 hours immersed in the game. Encouraged by his sons, who are dedicated Minecraft players, Black committed himself to understanding the game’s mechanics to authentically portray Steve, the protagonist in the live-action adaptation.
Jack Black’s Journey Into Minecraft Gaming
When offered the role in A Minecraft Movie, Jack Black saw many reasons to say yes. The film, directed by Jared Hess, reunited him with his Nacho Libre director and provided an opportunity to star alongside Jason Momoa. However, before finalizing his decision, Black sought approval from his most trusted critics—his sons. Not only did they encourage him to take the role, but they were thrilled about their father stepping into the blocky world of Minecraft.
With the movie set to release this Friday, Black wanted to fully immerse himself in the game’s culture. He had already played Minecraft casually with his children, but for this project, he took it to the next level—watching tutorials, playing for hours on end, and learning how to navigate the Overworld effectively.
Understanding the Role Through Gaming
“My kids were deep into Minecraft, and I wanted to speak their language,” Black shared. In the film, his character, Steve, is transported into Minecraft’s Overworld and becomes a skilled builder and survivor. He joins forces with a group of misfits who mysteriously enter the pixelated realm via a mysterious cubic portal that thrives on creativity.
Alongside Jack Black and Jason Momoa, the movie features Emma Myers, Danielle Brooks, Jennifer Coolidge, and Sebastian Hansen in key roles.
During production, Black dedicated more than 100 hours to playing Minecraft, often in between filming. “I put in the work. You have to invest the time, watch YouTube guides, and learn how to survive that first night in Minecraft. I got pretty good at it,” he said.
